I won’t start this off by showing you a glowing picture of myself as I still feel like I am learning what makes a good coach and personal trainer, physical preparation coach etc.
You could also talk to 100 different clients and get 100 different answers, much like asking who has the best Mum in the world, of course you are going to say yours… it’s just what you do! *
But I want to look at the character traits I have developed, ones I am still looking to improve upon as well as others that I feel do not have a place in a close environment.
First of all I am going to break down Personal training, two words, the former being PERSONAL! What I feel this means when you are having your consultation and training sessions with a trainer
· Taking the time to listen to you
· Looking at what you have said and working on your personal needs
· Is every part of your program made for YOU? From specifics of the warm up, to corrective exercises
· Knowing how to get you fired up on days otherwise you don’t wish to train
· Remembering your partner’s name, kids (or pets), when your birthday is, holidays etc.
The latter part being TRAINING
· Can the communicate with you throughout the session
· See the levels of stress your body can handle during a given session without ruining the rest of your week through soreness and mental fatigue
· Using coaching cues that you understand to get the most out of a given exercise
· Making any homework or additional gym sessions that you can understand and following through with without having to master the Matrix in order to do so
· Changing the workout depending upon that day if required to do so
I feel these are a few great starting points to work from, personally there are a few areas I wish to work on which include
· Creating simpler at home workouts
· Using more of my own videos to create systems to follow to help with recovery and fat loss
· Reading more about applying nutritional strategies (currently studying for my Precision Nutrition level 1)
· Giving out more high fives (you are reading this blog, you deserve one too!)
I feel Bret here has made a superb video on how to be a bad personal trainer. It's more entertaining than me writing about it.
*Of course mine is the best though.
